Eliminating the occurrence of feedback from hearing aids using digital signal processing has been a key development for modern hearing aids that has certainly led to improved satisfaction, comfort, and cosmetics.  More specifically, feedback cancellation in digital hearing aids led to the development of thin tube, open BTE fittings which now account for almost 40% of the sales of hearing instruments in the United States.

The most successful products in this class of fittings combine static feedback cancellation that increases the gain before feedback in the hearing aid (added stable gain) with feedback cancelation for dynamic situations such as using a telephone or putting anything near the hearing aid.  ReSound combines Dual StabilizerTM II DFS which allows for more high frequency gain than any other competitive product in both omni and directional settings with WhistleControlTM for dynamic situations in ReSound Live and dot2 by ReSound.

One common question that we get about WhistleControl in ReSound Live and dot2 by ReSound is how much gain reduction is applied when WhistleControl is set to mild, moderate, and strong?  It seems to be assumed that WhistleControl will affect audibility for a patient when activated.

Click on the link below to see a demonstration in the real-ear of how WhistleControl works when a phone is brought to the ear.  It can be seen that WhistleControl identifies the feedback and than stabilizes the gain back to the original prescribed settings without significantly affecting audibility even in the strong setting.
